Massage Techniques
Unless a client asks for a specific type of massage, our massage therapists generally use a combination of various massage methods to achieve the client’s specific goals for each massage session.
Acupressure
A therapy developed in Asia more than 5000 years ago which also may be called “acupuncture without needles.” This technique applies pressure to specific points on the body pressure-points. These pressure- points, when stimulated, can have a variety of effects including promoting blood circulation, reducing muscle tension, and relaxing the mind/body.
Deep Tissue
This method is used to release deeper layers of contracted muscles, ease pain, and reset muscle tone. The goal in deep tissue massage is to breakdown adhesions which can cause pain, inflammation and limit motion of the muscles and joints. It is important that the client provide feedback on the amount of pressure used.
Orthopedic Massage
This involves therapeutic assessment, manipulation and movement of locomotor soft tissue to reduce pain and dysfunction. Its objectives are to restore structural balance in the muscle groups throughout the body, and decompress arthritic or painful joints.
Prenatal Massage
Prenatal Massage is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness during pregnancy after the first trimester (must be at least 12 weeks unless recommended by doctor). Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches, and edema (or swelling). It also reduces stress on weight bearing joints, helps to relax nervous tension which aids in better sleep, and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.
Reflexology
This is a form of bodywork which focuses on applying pressure to “reflex areas” primarily on the feet and hands. In theory, these “reflex areas” correspond to specific glands, organs, and body parts. Reflexology is an effective and respective holistic therapy which may offer many health benefits.
Swedish
Working primarily with the superficial muscles, Swedish massage is designed to soothe the nervous system and improve circulation. These long, soft, kneading strokes decrease muscle tension and increase blood flow throughout the body.
